This is a great piece of writing advice from Ethan Hawke’s ask me anything on Reddit today. All of his answers about his life and filmmaking are quite thoughtful, it’s worth a read.

I’m currently in the throes of rededicating myself to story and screenwriting, so this is exactly what I need to hear.

A manga series written by Moebius and illustrated by Jiro Taniguchi, originally serialized in Japan in 2000, published in English by iBooks in 2003, collecting 2 volumes.

I wonder who is the author of the most beautiful tale in our history. The masterpieces of remote antiquity will remain unknown. The stories of that time were barbaric, vibrant, free; they traversed the centuries, long before cats and dogs, pigs and oxen were domesticated. There are still some human beings who lead a wild, barbarous life, though their number is diminishing day by day. Even worse, when new tales appear, men wreck them by cutting, altering and adding to them and, in no time, they are completely forgotten. Not many people realize that such a behavior makes storytelling fade away. It is said that there are endless accounts to be narrated, as many as the fishes in the sea and the birds in the sky. Today, though, we know for sure that “endless: does not exist. At least regarding fishes and birds. Luckily, now as much as in prehistory, there’s a magical place where stories can blossom and grow without restraint: the world of dreams. An inviolable world bravely protected by a great sleeping wall and by remembrance guardians. One of my dreams gave birth to the Icaro novel. Of course I removed the unnecessary and have divided the plot into several parts… It would have probably been thrown aside and forgotten. Fortunately, some mighty god has watched over it. Icaro has survived and has seen the light thanks to Jiro Taniguchi’s marvelous pictures. I escorted him from the world of dreams and he has joined us, though not to be forgotten as we wake up. I wish that all readers will come to know his story.

The Amazing Underwater Forest of Lake Kaindy

What makes Lake Kaindy truly remarkable is that it contains an underwater forest. Visible on the lakes surface are the tall, dried-out tops of submerged Spruce trees that rise above the water’s surface like the masts of sunken ships. They are the only sign of the amazing frozen forest below the water’s surface.

The water is so cold (even in summer the temperature does not exceed 6 degrees) that the pine needles remain on the trees, even after a hundred years of being submerged. During the winter, the lake freezes and becomes a popular spot for ice diving.

The lake is 400 meters long and is located in Kazakhstan’s portion of the Tian Shan Mountains, about 129 km from the city of Almaty. The lake was created after an earthquake in 1911 triggered a large landslide blocking the gorge and forming a natural dam.

It all comes down to that urge to fascism — maybe a big word to use for art, but I think the right word — it comes down to that urge to fascism to know what’s best for people, to know that some people are of the best and some people are of the worst; the urge to separate the good from the bad and to praise oneself; to decide what covers on what books people ought to read, what songs people ought to be moved by, what art they ought to make, an urge that makes art into a set of laws that take away your freedom rather than a kind of activity that creates freedom or reveals it. It all comes down to the notion that, in the end, there is a social explanation for art, which is to say an explanation of what kind of art you should be ashamed of and what kind of art you should be proud of. It’s the reduction of the mystery of art, where it comes from, where it goes…
